Blackwell Journals Moving to Wiley June 26, 2008

Certain journal titles subscribed to by the Library are provided via Blackwell. These journals are all to be merged with the Wiley InterScience Collection.
The main difference users will see is a different look to the pages holding these particular journals, which will no longer have Blackwell branding.

Saturday June 28	2:00 am	Blackwell Synergy closes down
Sunday June 29	10:00 am	Wiley InterScience goes offline temporarily
Monday June 30	2:00 am	Wiley InterScience comes back online, with Blackwell journals incorporated Blackwell Synergy is no longer available

Reminder: Central Library Closure June 26, 2008

The Central Library will be closed from Saturday 28th June to Sunday 6th July for the completion of the ground floor building work. The Library will reopen on Monday 7th July.

‘Films of Fact’ Exhibition @ the Science Museum London June 25, 2008

The Science Museum London is running an exhibition about scientific films and television programmes. Entitled Films of Fact, this exhibition deals with four specific genres of scientific film-making, including nature and technology productions.
Films of Fact charts the development of scientific film-making, examined through the lens of various historical periods.
The exhibition runs until February 2009, and entry is free of charge.

New Web Search via SFX June 23, 2008

is a means of accessing the full text of an article or other resource, from a citation in a database that the Library subscribes to, or from the Library Catalogue.
Whenever you see the button within a resource, you can click it to attempt to access the full text.

has a new ‘Web Search’ feature which allows users to carry out a related search on Google Scholar. There are four options.

1. Article title – search terms (full article title) are input automatically.
2. Author – change the drop down menu to author and the author is input automatically so you can search for articles by that author.
3. Journal title – change the drop down menu to this option and the journal title is input into the search box.
4. The fourth option is to input your own keywords.

This new Web Search feature only appears when there are no full text links available via the menu. It allows users to view the abstract of the article, or if available, an open access copy via an institutional repository.

The John Johnson Collection June 18, 2008

Housed in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, this archive of printed ephemera contains an array of material from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. It has now been digitised .
The digitisation of this collection means that more than 65,000 documents will become available electronically.
The John Johnson Collection contains ephemera related to gender, popular culture, commerce, technology, crime, and a host of other areas.
Access is available by IP address only.

Journal Citation Reports 2007 June 18, 2008

The Journal Citation information for 2007 is now available at Journal Citation Reports. The Social Sciences edition covers over 1,700 journals, while the Science collection covers over 5,900 titles.
Useful information gan be gained from the data, including:

* Number of articles published in the journal in for a given year.
* Number of citations to that journal from articles published in a given year.
* Impact factor of the journal, and how it ranks in impact in relation to other journals.

Oxford Reference Online Upgraded June 16, 2008

This electronic resource has been upgraded to the Premium Collection. It now incorporates a range of new material across various subject areas, including:

The Times Online Archive June 13, 2008

The Times newspaper archive, 1785-1985, is from today available online. Access is freely available to all at present; with a registration requirement. All material has been digitally scanned and is fully searchable.
